This embossed fretwork metal panel is an excellent example of the revitalization of traditional Indian art initiated by the British in India during the second half of the 19th Century. This type of work is found in Bhuj, Kutch, Madras, in the areas of Gujarat, Tamil Nadu and Rajastan. The scene appears to represent a Persian banquet or celebration, with dancers and musicians. The entire background is covered in plants and flowers, which would indicate that the banquet is taking place in a natural space, or represents a celebration of the Persian new year (Nouruz), which takes place at the beginning of Spring. The surrounding phytomorphic ornaments are typical of Persian art, and reminiscent of the traditional Mughal paintings in India.
