Despite the modernization of Iranian military tactics in the 19th century, traditional weapons and armor inspired by Persian tradition were still made, like this shield that was part of a full uniform. Its purpose is not so clear; it may have been used for military parades, religious ceremonies historical theater or a souvenir for travelers at the end of the century, like Pedro Del Rio Zañartu, who visited Iran in 1904.
This magnificent example of a silver Iranian shield has its entire surface covered with scenes from Persian culture. Human figures and calligraphy concentrically fill the designed surface, wrapping up in the center with an epic scene of a Persian hero defeating the devil.
