Lacquered Bowls

Lacquered Bowls

China

The ancient and venerable tradition of lacquer handcraft has been part of China for 7000 years. The burial offerings of Lady Dai, 2nd century B.C. and the Marquis of Yi, 5th century B.C. are examples of the lacquer art in all kinds of objects like plates, bowls, cutlery, glasses, musical instruments, drums, weapons, armor, mirrors, lacquer makeup containers and more. To produce lacquer, expert hands are needed to extract and use the tree sap, a soft resin applied in layers to achieve a lasting, glossy and colorful finish. In these small bowls it is possible to enjoy the simplicity of monochrome lacquer in its natural state. The simplicity of the objects is both beautiful and practical.
