Bronze camel

Bronze camel

Lebanon

Pedro del Rio Zañartu visited Lebanon in 1904, when it was still part of the Ottoman Empire (until 1918). It is here that he acquired this bronze sculpture.
Gold in color and 42 cm in height, this bronze camel, with its entire body decorated with scenes of feasts, instils itself in the Middle East collection. It is decorated with human figures, instruments and banquets in a style that was common and the beginning of the 20th century.
With details on the camel’s neck and long legs, this domesticated animal is a symbol of exchange, travel and trade, and is widely used in Middle Eastern art.
